International Astronomy Day 2020

INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY DAY 2020

International Astronomy Day is a worldwide event which is observed during Spring and Fall. It’s intended to promote greater education and understanding of the universe as well as the ways in which we can observe it. Star-gazing, visits to planetariums and astronomy workshops are common activities.

Spring Stars: Tips and Tricks for Observing the Night Sky

The first International Astronomy Day took place in 1973, under the guidance of Doug Berger who was president of the Astronomical Association of Southern California.

This holiday occurs twice a year on a Saturday between Mid-April or Mid-May for the Spring date or mid-September and mid-October in the Fall. Each year the dates are as close as possible to the first quarter moon of the two seasons.

However, in 2020, International Astronomy Day will fall on the 2nd of May and the 26th of September.

OBSERVE THE SKY

On the day, museums, observatories, universities, and astronomy clubs around the world set up easily accessible telescopes in public spaces including schools, parks, and shopping malls to allow people to observe the skies during the day and night. Other events include lectures and conferences, educational outreach, exhibitions, and essay competitions.
